My UMHS review

Now that all the excitement of match is over, i felt it would be good for future clinical students and students considering UMHS have a brief overview and my impressions of the school. First, I can offer NO review of the basic science portion of the school since i was a transfer into semester 5 in Maine.

1) Maine Program: Thought the Maine semester was both good and bad. It provided a very valuable introduction to some of the bread and butter medical conditions and started to build a foundation of how to think through clinical scenarios. Learning valuable physical exam skills that as Caribbean students we are lacking compared to US students at the start of the third year. Program was run very well by Dr. P. Kaplan review didnt really care for it, outside of the path guy (who was excellent and now is doing Pathoma) didnt find it helpful and it simply went on and on. The Clinical shadowing was hit or miss depending on where you went, some liked it, some didnt, for me it was average. I have heard that there have been changes since i was there and that is good.

2) Clinicals: I was placed into clinical rotations within 3 weeks of sending in my passing step score. I was able to do ALL GREENBOOK cores. The only gaps in my clinicals were ones that i wanted for vacation or simply waiting to be placed in a specific hospital. Some rotations are good, some are bad. The same rotation in the same hospital can be good for one student and be awful for the next depending on the residents/attendings who are on service at that particular time. For the most part didactic sessions were good for smaller community type programs.

3) Administration: After coming from the school i came from the UMHS administration was outstanding. They are very responsive to questions and concerns and for the most part work with the students as much as possible, we can email the President of the University and he will respond to you and try to help. If you try to compare it to a US school you will be disappointed as there is simply much less "man-power" and individual attention but much better than where i came from. I was able to do 2 months of electives at a very good US MD program at a cost of 2k per 4 week rotation and UMHS paid almost triple what my previous school and several other Caribbean schools pay for elective rotations which was very impressive. The only downside i would say is that we were told in my 5th semester (almost 3 years ago) that they were in the process of getting NY approval. Obviously we dont have NY approval yet and they timetable for that has been pretty much not publicized.

We had a very good match list for a young school this year and once we get NY approval i would say UMHS would be best choice out of all the schools that DO NOT have California approval.

Hello everyone

I was accepted into the fall 2013 ARP program. I'm very excited and hope to meet a few people before heading down in August.

For any students who have gone through the program, can you provide feedback on how you feel it went? How many people were accepted into the program and how many advanced to the MD program? I have had several friends attend the MERP program at Ross and express their concerns about any programs such as this one.

Thanks

Would any current students like to talk about the availability of groceries and other food at the UMHS?
I'm a student heading there for the May semester, and I was wondering what options exist. I have no dietary preferences, and was wondering about the availability of things such as fresh milk, meat, eggs, fish, vegetables/fruits and other items. I would appreciate some feedback, thanks :)

Does anyone know about gyms on the island that offer reasonable rates? Or any other fitness clubs?

While attending medical school, I intend to have a healthy diet and exercise routine, so I'm trying to plan what to ship to the island that's not available, and where to go a few times a week to work out.

Hi Everyone!

For anyone who has been accepted into the September 2013 class for UMHS, be sure to add UMHS on facebook!! There are over 40 already accepted students, ranging from ARP, EBS, and Basic Sciences (Apparently you can't put B and S together withouth Value MD assuming it is a swear word. LOL! **)! It would be great to meet other students who will be heading to UMHS this fall.

You can find the page by searching: September 2013 Class- UMHS St. Kitts.

** Side note: for students already down in St. Kitts, can you provide some feedback on the apartments in the area? Are there any that you would consider safer than others? How is the Royal? Does it provide a good atmosphere for studying? **

Attrition Rate

Hey guys! :)

I just was just wondering what the attrition rate is at the school.

I know the website says 4%, but I don't know how up-to-date or accurate that information is. If I could get a response form a student that currently attends the school, that would be great!

Thank you for your help!

online bachelors with my medical degree

online bachelors with my medical degree?

Hello everyone. I completed highschool and two years/60 credits of community college in the United States. I then applied to a lower tier caribbean medical school and have completed 2 years of basic sciences. I am currently studying for my USMLE Step 1 exam. After my Step 1 exam, I will complete my 3rd and 4th year in the United States, doing rotations at my school affiliated hospitals.

My question is, along with 3rd-4th year, would it be wise to finish my bachelors degree? If so, should I complete it with a large public university(that offer online courses like nyu, uchicago, ucla, uflorida), or would that be pointless?

If not, what about online universities like (walden, davenport, u.phoenix, etc). Are they even legit? Will this even be beneficial, "a guy with an md degree and a bachelors degree in business/health/management for example"?

Please note I already have 60 undergrad credits. Thanks!

UMHS vs SMU vs MUA

I'm new here, and I'm sure this has been posted a few times, but hopefully someone can help me out. I got into all 3 schools, still waiting to here back from AUA. From what I've gathered so far, I've heard extremely mixed reviews. MUA mirrors Saba and people are saying it should receive CA approval soon. Is this true? I've also heard St. Matthew's lost it's Cali approval? I'm not sure what happened there, if anyone is able to explain it to me. Last, I know UMHS hasn't been accredited by anyone yet, but multiple people have told me that it is up and coming and could eventually enter the big 4. Does anyone have thoughts to this?

Thank you.

UMHS vs. Other Schools??????????????????

I have recently seen alot of people on the forums asking questions about UMHS. As a graduate I try my best to answer the questions potential students have. I think if your considering the University you should try to attend one of the information seminars. There will be an information seminar this Saturday in Toronto which will highlight two recent graduates. This would be a great chance to hear directly from those that have experienced the University. Instead of asking a million questions on this forum come and have them answered directly. I try to do these seminars when my schedule permits because I know how valuable they are for those considering their options. I have copied the information about the seminar from the UMHS website. You have to register via their website, which is Welcome | UMHS Caribbean Medical School St. Kitts

Any affiliations for clinical rotations in WA state?

Hi,

I am new to this forum. Im considering UMHS for MD program, but wanted to know if it is possible to do clinicals (3rd and 4th year) in anywhere/somewhere in Washington state? Also, if there's any possible way to obtain rotations in hospitals which are not affiliated with UMHS (e.g. any if any kind of paperwork student has to do or to pass step 2 or something) ?

Thanks.

My Story:

I just graduated from Penn State with a major in general biology. My overall cum gpa was 3.26 and science gpa was 3.0. I started strong freshman year then took a step back sophomore and junior year. I did however finish strong during my senior year as I raised my cum gpa from a 3.2 to a 3.26 during my last semester before graduating. I took the mcat once after my junior year but scored a 14 due to lack of studying/seriousness and I had not taken organic chemistry yet. I have been studying all summer for the mcat and I am slated to take it August 22nd. I have been scoring around 18-22 range on my practice tests. I have been shadowing a few doctors over the years and I work with my dad who is a doctor. I have seen over 50 surgeries of his and I have many personal relationships with some of his patients. I have LORs and I believe I have the work ethic.

My Questions:

1. What schools do you think I should apply to?
2. I applied to UMHS and I was wondering what mcat score I would need?
3. Is there any chance I can attend medical school stating spring 2014?
4. Any other additional advice would be great.
