UMHS or St. Martinus as a transfer student?

$

Hello, I am a transfer student from a US medical school and was recently accepted into UMHS for the 5th clinical semester. I was also accepted to St. Martinus University Faculty of Medicine (SMUFOM) and they allowed me to transfer directly into 4th year, which was where I stand at my previous school. Can you guys please shed some light on how I should choose between the two schools? Thanks so much!

UMHS
Pros: better record of matching (list gets longer and longer since 2011, over 60 total have matched), good rotations, better administration and support, better known school?
Cons: need to repeat third year, limited financial aid (max $5,500 school loan per semester at 8%), twice as much debt (about $70K in tuition to complete MD, not including expenses)

SMUFOM
Pros: can transfer directly into 4th year, institutional loan available to cover full cost of attendance (7.3% int), less debt (about $30K total in tuition)
Cons: only one person who applied but did match this year in a surgery residency in Florida (they posted about 20 or so who matched or is practicing on their website, their office said they are still trying to track down past gradautes from the old administration), history of briefly closing in 2008 due to investment issues (but is now under new leadership, the person who matched this year stayed with the school despite what happened in 2008 so that is why they had so few students apply for the match this year)

Clinical transfer policy ?

Hey,

Could someone please explain what this modified 5th term is all about ? Where is it located and and what kind of basic science exam do we have to pass ? I passed step 1 and had to take some time off for personal issues and looking to transfer to UHMS to finish my 3rd and 4th year clinical .

Copied from website :

Students that have passed Step 1 and wish to do UMHS Clinical clerkship rotations must pass a modified 5th semester to include the Introduction of Clinical Medicine and review sessions on Basic Science courses. - See more at: Transfer Policy | UMHS Admissions | St Kitts Medical School | UMHS Caribbean Medical School St. Kitts

Thanks

Feel this is a ripoff school.
Clinicals were weak, almost no inpatient work, very little patient hand on training, preceptors cashed the check and ignores the student, saddled with debt and a useless degree.
Do not believe what you read on their website or what they promise. The original Ross of Ross University fame is dead and this is the family trying to cash in on his name.
This is my personal opinion from having gone through their program a couple of years ago.
MY life is hell. I could have spent my time going to law school or getting an MBA- THEN I would be able to get a job.
A useless MD makes me a job in the job market.
Besides: American medical school graduates cannot even get a residency starting this year.
This is my personal opinion and can be substantiated with facts.
If anyone else has had this experience, contact me and I will pay for an attorney for a class action lawsuit and a DOJ complaint.

UMHS - New Full Cost Loan Program

It gives us great pleasure to announce that we have established a private loan program through a nationally recognized lender to provide loans up to the full cost of attendance. It's been a long time coming and we couldn't be happier. Our administration did not want to settle on a lender that wouldn't cover full costs and wouldn't provide favorable terms for our students. Ultimately we've held out and it's paid off big time! We want to thank all of you for believing in UMHS.

Happy Holidays!!!

Any chance of acceptance into UMHS or other Caribbean schools?

Hi,

I saw an ad for UMHS online and decided to look into it, however I cannot find any stats on their acceptance GPA's and MCAT scores. I thought someone here could help me out. My situation is that I planned on applying to med school this past fall, but completely bombed the MCAT. I am a very good student, always had an A- average in High school, however am not great on standardized tests.

My cumulative GPA is a 3.54, science is 3.25, and non-science is 3.71. My MCAT was a 19. This obviously completely halted my med school application and I'm very upset about the situation. I have always wanted to be a doctor and I know I'm smart enough. I know I can handle med school because I'm a very hard-worker. My real problem is really just this MCAT and I'm afraid it's going to keep me from the career I've always wanted.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any advice on my situation and my grades. I am planning on taking the MCAT again in maybe 5 months and really am going to try my best, but at this point I feel very discouraged. I did not score that low on my practice MCATs so it was a bit of a shock and more than likely it was the product of anxiety.

I'm wondering if I would have any chance of getting into any accredited Caribbean schools. My GPA is well above the minimum 2.0 required for most of them, so I'm wondering if it might be worthwhile to apply. I'm 26 years old and at this point really want to get settled in a career and move on with my life so I'm just trying to see if I have any other options.

I appreciate the input anyone can give. Thanks so much.

No residencies in 2015 for IMGs????

Does anyone know of the articles and discussions going around about how there will be no available residencies for foreign med graduates in 2015? I keep reading how they bumped up the number of American medical school seats and are phasing our foreign grads. What is the likelihood of placing, if decent scores are obtained? Hoping to do the match in 2015, but now I am beginning to have doubts.

Residency and Relocation Loans

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone, current or former student has any information on obtaining a residency and relocation loan. UMHS is not on the approved list medical schools of any lender since they are not DOE approved....Discover, Sallie Mae, PNC, Wells Fargo. Has anyone obtained this loan as soon as they matched into a program or are there other ways to obtain this or a similar loan? I have not yet met with my bank in person...I was going to wait till I matched and had actual program information, but wanted information sooner than later about this. I tried UMHS financial aid for help, but got nowhere. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

International transfer to UMHS

I'm a prospective student currently studying MBBS in India. I'm almost done my second year and am wondering about the chance of transferring to UMHS into 5th semester and continuing with that program.

Is anyone familiar with this process? Or know anyone who has done this?

I'm a US citizen, and attended part of AUA's pre-med program fresh out of high school before transferring to M.S. Ramaiah medical college in Bangalore. I've taken all the courses listed in semesters 1 - 4 of the UMHS curriculum, and have a Skype session scheduled with an adviser tomorrow to discuss further details.

Just wondering if anyone has some info on this. Thanks in advance!

Would current or future UMHS students be interested in a tutor available after school hours? The tutor is a medical school grad from the Caribbean, did exceptionally well on step 1, and did one year surgery PGY1. He switched to Internal Medicine and unfortunately didn't match and is now waiting on a position back in surgery. Should he look into coming to the island and starting an after hours tutoring service? No C's on his transcript and his understanding of the material is evident through his teaching capabilities.

Can any current UMHS students give me some advise on the school. I'm currently a 2nd semester student at MUA and I'm considering transferring to UMHS in the 3rd semester mainly because they only have only 4 semesters on the island and the 5th semester is in the U.S with the Live Kaplan program. Besides that they appear to be very similar to MUA, but younger. Can any current UMHS students give me any advise on the school?
